My introduction to the fiction of Mary Gaitskill is Bad Behavior: I mean not that these stories are ageless, though they are.

She did not consider it serious work, and in fact enjoyed it at times. Several take place in Manhattan, but not all.
There’s a sentence or a paragraph in each essay that just nails it for me. Several are third person accounts, but not all.
They talked about leather gloves, high heels and their favorite writers. They had since had a falling out. The story Connection is about a female friendship. But I was even more interested in the quality of mind with which Gaitskill imbued her characters.
